on my trip to austin, i was lucky enough to sample the mind-numbingly indulgent donuts at Gourdough’s on Lamar. simply put… crack for donut lovers. and cake lovers. and well, any other sweet tooth. the menu is inspired with flying pigs, baby rattler and odb. which means nothing until you read closer- flying pig is maple icing with BACON. oh yeah, baby. bacon. baby rattler has exactly that atop, a baby gummy rattler. and odb, thankfully does not have an ole dirty bastard on it, but rather cream filled donut holes topped with coconut. i was blessed enough to eat almost all of the flying pig, which did have insane maple icing and freshly fried bacon. but let’s not neglect the actual donut that the aforementioned ingredients sit upon. damn it is good. it is a hybrid of a cake and a raised donut- has the density of a cake but the texture of a raised. is rounded square in shape. and freeking delicious.

others sampled were the nice and naughty- brilliantly sugary cinnamon that clung nicely to the freshly fried dough. also tried the mama’s cake, which is essentially cake batter topped with loads of fudgey icing. that was less a donut that one might eat in the daylight and more a naughty treat to be enjoyed only after dark. with perhaps a nice port.

but seriously, if you are a fan of the humble donut or even want an indulgent treat, stop by next time you are in austin.

cheerio.
